Learning Comes to Life: WVVA Students Explore Education and Environment at the Zoology Zone

Stories & Spotlights

When you think of online school, you might imagine students learning from their computers at home — but at West Virginia Virtual Academy (WVVA), learning often extends far beyond the screen.

Recently, elementary students and their families traveled from across the state for an unforgettable in-person field trip to the Zoology Zone Science Center in Hurricane, West Virginia.

Exploring turtles, snakes, lizards, insects, and more, over 25 WVVA students and their families spent the day immersed in wildlife education. Surrounded by fascinating rescued animals, students discovered how science can come alive outside the classroom — making this an unforgettable day of hands-on learning.

Immersive Education in Action

The Zoology Zone Science Center is a wildlife and environmental conservation hub dedicated to spreading awareness about reptiles, amphibians, and their vital role in our ecosystems. Every creature in their care is a rescue, and visitors learn not just about the animals themselves, but about compassion, and environmental conservation.

As the students and families trickled in, they freely explored all the tanks and treasures scattered around the science center. Interactive games about reptiles and insects, a 6ft long snakeskin, and even Madagascar hissing cockroaches were just some of the sights available to visitors.

The main attraction of the field trip was the animal show featuring some of the center’s most popular residents! The elementary students first met Opi, a desert-dwelling turtle who loves warm weather and hibernates in winter. Each child was invited to gently pet Opi with two fingers, a first for many.

When a student asked, “How hot does Opi like it?” the zoologists explained how turtles regulate body temperature and adapt to extreme climates. Another student wondered, “How durable is his shell?” — prompting engaging conversations about zoology and allowing the students to learn by interacting directly with the animals.

Next up was Oreo, a California king snake who quickly became a favorite as students bravely reached out to touch his smooth scales. To everyone’s delight, the zoologists then introduced a bearded dragon, and many students were excited to share that they had a pet beaded dragon at home!

Classroom Connections Come to Life

For many WVVA students, this trip was about more than just meeting the animals but about meeting each other.

“It was very good,” said 4th grader, Cody, “It was super exciting to meet everyone and finally see my friends in person!”

At WVVA, these moments are what makes virtual learning so powerful. Through field trips, regional gatherings, and statewide events, WVVA ensures that online students experience hands-on learning, social connections, and friendships that last well beyond the classroom.

Teachers like Mrs. Estes and Mrs. Townson helped make the day extra special — and were quick to share their appreciation with students and parents.

“Thank you for traveling and coming to support WVVA!” the two shared.

Discovering a Better Way to Learn
