Preparing Students for Life After Graduation: WVVA’s College Week Opens Doors to the Future

Stories & Spotlights

West Virginia Virtual Academy is committed to empowering students long after they log out of class for the day—and this year’s College Week proved just how many opportunities are within reach for WVVA high schoolers.

A Week Built for Possibility

The week kicked off with a virtual graduation panel where counselors and academic coaches answered real questions about graduation timelines, requirements, and what students can expect next.

Throughout the week, counselors and graduation coaches hosted virtual drop-in hours in the K12 Zone, giving students direct access to individualized support. Whether planning for college, a career, or military service, WVVA staff were ready to guide each student toward a pathway that fits their goals.

The College & Career Fair: Over 250 Students, Unlimited Opportunities

The highlight of College Week was the virtual College and Career Fair—an interactive event that brought together the colleges, companies, and organizations shaping West Virginia’s future workforce. More than 250 high school students explored options they may never have discovered otherwise.

Students connected with representatives from West Virginia University, Blue Ridge Community & Technical College, Davis & Elkins College, Concord University, and many others to learn about dual-enrollment opportunities, degree programs, scholarships, and what it takes to thrive at the next level.

But the fair didn’t stop at higher education. Students also gained firsthand insight from industry leaders like Nucor, The EdVenture Group, The Greenbrier, and WorkForce WV. These conversations opened students’ eyes to high-demand careers in engineering, tourism, manufacturing, business, and more. Honor society booths highlighted the importance of excellence, service, and community involvement—core traits WVVA strives to build in every student.

Finally, military branches, including the U.S. Army, West Virginia National Guard, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard, were on hand to share leadership pathways and real-world experiences.

At WVVA, we understand the unique education needs of military families and students and are happy to provide them with dedicated resources and support. WVVA has even been designated a Purple Heart School by the WV Department of Education and is committed to serving its military families so all students can have everything they need to succeed.

Hands-On Skill Building

College Week helped students not just explore their future but prepare for it.

Students participated in skill-building breakout sessions from school counselors designed to make them confident and competitive applicants. Students could review college applications, learn how to craft rocking resumes, or gain insight into branding, budgeting, and developing big ideas.

These sessions weren’t hypothetical but gave students practical tools they can use right now.

Inspiring Students to Dream – And Take Action

College Week was more than an event; it was a celebration of student’s ambition, curiosity, and potential. Students walked away with new confidence, clearer plans, and meaningful connections that can guide them through their next steps—whether that’s college, a career, or service to their country.

Give your student the tools to dream big—and the support to succeed.
