Stories & Spotlights

On February 10 over 50 students, families, administrators, and teachers from West Virginia Virtual Academy (WVVA) made their voices heard at the West Virginia State Capitol. The visit was an opportunity for WVVA students to learn about state government, meet with lawmakers, and advocate for the importance of school choice and online education in the Mountain State.

The day began with the unique opportunity to meet with state legislators to share personal stories about how WVVA has positively impacted their education. Through these conversations, students highlighted the flexibility, academic rigor, and individualized support that WVVA provides to families across West Virginia. After lunch, students and parents participated in an exciting tour of the Capitol complex, where students explored the historic halls and learned about the legislative process.

“Our students and families are the best advocates for the power of virtual education,” said Doug Cipoletti, Executive Director of WVVA. “Being at the Capitol allowed them to share firsthand how school choice has opened doors and provided opportunities that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.”

“WVVA students shared their excitement and love for their school with legislators,” said Courtney Estes, WVVA 4th Grade Teacher. “Many students expressed that they feel safe, valued, and supported in a community where everyone works together.”

A highlight of the visit was a group photo with lawmakers on the Senate floor, a moment that symbolized the collaboration between students and policymakers working together to shape the future of education in the state.

WVVA remains committed to ensuring that students across West Virginia have access to high-quality, flexible learning options that meet their unique needs. Events like this Capitol visit reinforce the school’s mission to empower students and provide them with the tools they need to succeed—both in school and beyond.

Thank you to our students, families, and staff for representing WVVA with passion and pride. We look forward to continuing our advocacy efforts and expanding educational opportunities for students across the state!
