When Emma M., an 11th-grade student from Greenbrier County, West Virginia, joined the West Virginia Virtual Academy (WVVA), she wasn’t just looking for a school—she was seeking a place where she could thrive despite challenges. Her story is one of creativity, determination and entrepreneurial spirit.

Emma’s decision to enroll in WVVA stemmed from a need for flexibility and understanding. As she faced chronic health issues that made traditional schooling difficult, Emma found WVVA to be the perfect solution. “I struggled with getting the right accommodations in public school,” she explains. “The teachers at WVVA are incredibly understanding, especially since many online students deal with similar challenges. They’re supportive when I need breaks or time to step away.”

Nurturing Creativity Through Costume Design

Beyond academics, Emma has a remarkable talent for costume design, an interest she discovered in 2018. Always an animal enthusiast, Emma became fascinated by creating costumes inspired by animal characters. With her grandmother’s guidance and countless hours spent watching tutorials, Emma taught herself how to design and construct intricate animal costumes.

Her hobby soon blossomed into a passion and a potential career path. “This has helped me explore what I love and even think about future job opportunities,” she shares. Emma is particularly drawn to the possibilities in theater costuming or design, where her artistic skills and love for storytelling could shine.

Emma’s dedication didn’t stop at crafting costumes for herself. She turned her passion into a small business, selling her creations online. With the help of her dad, Emma launched an Etsy store, where she handles everything from designing product listings to managing customer interactions. “Starting my own business has been one of my biggest accomplishments,” she says. “It’s amazing to see my creations out in the world and being appreciated by others.”

While running a small business comes with challenges, like occasional slow periods, Emma’s resilience keeps her moving forward. She values the entrepreneurial lessons she’s learned and enjoys the process of sharing her designs with a broader audience.

The WVVA Difference

Emma credits WVVA’s flexible schedule and supportive environment with giving her the time and energy to pursue her creative endeavors. She’s also quick to dispel the myth that virtual students lack social connections. “You meet people in class and outside of school through shared hobbies,” she says. “It actually gives you a bigger network because you connect with people you might not have met otherwise.”

Emma’s advice for anyone considering WVVA? “It’s not as scary as it might seem. Take the time to explore your options and find what works best for you,” she encourages.

Looking Ahead

As Emma approaches her senior year, her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit continue to shape her vision for the future. Whether it’s designing costumes for theater productions or growing her business, Emma is excited about the opportunities ahead.

Emma M. is a shining example of how WVVA helps students overcome challenges and reach their full potential, both academically and personally. Her journey is a testament to the power of flexibility, creativity, and determination.
