Choosing Service: WVVA Senior Averi’s Bold Leap into the Marines
For most high school seniors, graduation marks a turning point — college plans, summer jobs, maybe a well-earned break. But for Averi, a senior at West Virginia Virtual Academy (WVVA), the future is already in motion. She’s not just crossing a stage to get her diploma; she’s stepping into a new chapter of service and commitment. In just a few weeks, Averi will leave for boot camp as a newly enlisted Marine.
Averi’s journey to WVVA began midway through her high school career, during a time of personal challenges. The flexibility of virtual learning offered the space she needed to reset and refocus. “Going online was the best option,” she says. “I have more personal time, and the schedule isn’t horrible. You’re not stuck in the same classes every day.”
That adaptability made a difference. While she describes herself as more independent than social, Averi still found value in WVVA’s supportive environment. “The teachers are nice. And honestly, there’s no bullying, which is huge compared to traditional schools,” she explains. “I wish I had switched sooner.”
Averi is proudly participating in the in-person graduation ceremony and has remained active in academics as a member of the National Honor Society. Her contributions have included service projects like Operation Christmas Child — just one example of her drive to give back.
That sense of responsibility is also what led her to the military. Coming from a family with a military background, Averi says enlisting has always been on her mind — even as a child. “When I was seven or eight, I used to ask my Elf on the Shelf if I should join the Army,” she laughs. “It’s just always been a part of me.” Though she briefly set the idea aside, it resurfaced one night in a spontaneous decision that would shape her path forward. “It was 2 a.m., and I just decided to text a recruiter. A week later, she enlisted.
Now, she’s set to begin boot camp at Parris Island — the start of a career built on grit, independence, and a willingness to serve. While the thought of leaving her pets behind is the hardest part, Averi is ready. “WVVA prepared me well,” she says of her school and support system. “If you have questions about the future, they answer them.”
Averi McDaniel isn’t just graduating — she’s launching into something bigger than herself. Her story is one of resilience, purpose, and quiet strength. WVVA is proud to spotlight her as one of its standout seniors, and the Marines are about to gain one impressive recruit.
