WVVA and ArtCart are celebrating their second year of collaboration, proving that art is more than just creativity—it’s a powerful tool for learning! This dynamic partnership is transforming education by seamlessly integrating reading, writing, math, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills into hands-on, engaging art lessons.  Fifth grade teacher Ms. Lake believes that ArtCart has “helped students build confidence in their abilities, express themselves in creative ways, and build an appreciation for the creative process”.

Designed for upper elementary students in grades 3-5, ArtCart offers a virtual, interactive experience where students dive into color theory, observational drawing, design principles, and the elements of art. Founded by Kate Hushion in 2016, ArtCart has become a beloved program in schools across West Virginia, igniting young artists’ imaginations.

“I have seen incredible creative development from my ArtCart students. They pick up new skills and knowledge with every class. I love logging on and hearing their excitement for ArtCart! Watching them grow as artists is the best part,” shared Kate Winchester, WVVA’s ArtCart teacher.  WVVA educators see similar success.  Ms. Bernardi, a 3rd grade teacher shares that  “Miss Kate is wonderful with the students.  She’s patient and caring and has lessons that they enjoy.  She inspires creativity and helps students discover their unique voice while exploring new worlds”.

Fourth-grade students have been honing their observational drawing skills by replicating everyday objects, sculpting with clay, and crafting aluminum foil masterpieces. Their latest projects focus on symmetry and watercolor techniques, showcasing their artistic growth in vibrant and exciting ways.

For fourth-grader Baylor, ArtCart has sparked a dream: “I want to be an artist and have a gallery for my friends to see!”

With every brushstroke and sketch, WVVA and ArtCart continue to inspire the next generation of creative thinkers and lifelong learners!
