Hispanic Heritage Month – Celebrating & embracing diversity

From September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month encourages us to reflect on the significance of Hispanic influence in our country’s development, while also highlighting the importance of embracing diverse perspectives in education.

Hispanic Month was established to recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities in the United States, starting as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and expanding to a full month in 1988. The dates were selected to coincide with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile.

  1. Connect with the broader world.
  2. Develop a greater appreciation for the unique experiences that shape our society.
  3. Immerse themselves in rich Hispanic history and culture.

When students see themselves reflected in their learning experiences, it fosters a sense of belonging and pride. Hispanic Heritage Month gives us the opportunity to showcase the stories of trailblazers like César Chávez, a civil rights leader who fought for farmworkers’ rights, and Sylvia Rivera, a transgender activist and pioneer in the LGBTQ+ movement. These figures show students that leadership can take many forms and inspire them to embrace their own potential.

At West Virginia Virtual Academy, we strive to create an inclusive educational environment where students from all backgrounds feel supported and valued. By celebrating diverse cultures like those represented during Hispanic Heritage Month, we equip our students with the knowledge and understanding they need to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.

Here are a few ideas for how families can celebrate together:

  1. Read Inclusive Books: Reading is one of the most powerful ways to learn about other cultures. Explore books that tell the stories of Hispanic individuals and communities, offering children a window into the lives of others while promoting empathy and understanding. WVVA families can find great reading lists that showcase diverse voices and stories to enjoy together.
  2. Discover Hispanic Art and Music: From the vibrant murals of Diego Rivera to the lively rhythms of reggaeton, Hispanic art and music have had a significant impact on global culture. Take time as a family to explore these artistic expressions, discussing their historical context and cultural significance.
  3. Learn About Hispanic Holidays and Traditions: Celebrations like Día de los Muertos and Hispanic Christmas traditions offer valuable insight into the customs and values of Hispanic cultures. Use these moments as an opportunity to discuss the importance of cultural heritage and its role in shaping individual and community identities.
  4. Share Family Stories: If you have Hispanic roots, this is a great time to share your family’s heritage with your children. Encourage them to ask questions about their background and learn more about the traditions that make your family unique.

At WVVA, we are dedicated to preparing students for success by embracing diversity in all forms. Join us in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and help your child grow into a thoughtful, inclusive leader by exploring these must-read books today.
