At West Virginia Virtual Academy (WVVA), we are committed to providing an inclusive education that empowers all students to become well-rounded leaders. One of the key ways we foster inclusivity is by celebrating diversity, and Hispanic Heritage Month is an ideal opportunity to honor the rich culture, history, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

From September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month encourages us to reflect on the significance of Hispanic influence in our country’s development, while also highlighting the importance of embracing diverse perspectives in education.

Why We Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Month was established to recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities in the United States, starting as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and expanding to a full month in 1988. The dates were selected to coincide with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile.

At WVVA, we believe that an inclusive education means recognizing the diverse cultures and identities of all students. Celebrating this month provides students the chance to:

  1. Connect with the broader world.
  2. Develop a greater appreciation for the unique experiences that shape our society.
  3. Immerse themselves in rich Hispanic history and culture. 

The Importance of Representation in Inclusive Education

When students see themselves reflected in their learning experiences, it fosters a sense of belonging and pride. Hispanic Heritage Month gives us the opportunity to showcase the stories of trailblazers like César Chávez, a civil rights leader who fought for farmworkers’ rights, and Sylvia Rivera, a transgender activist and pioneer in the LGBTQ+ movement. These figures show students that leadership can take many forms and inspire them to embrace their own potential.
